How to Find Biblical Wisdom: The Wisdom You Already Have

“Who is wise and understanding among you?” — James 3:13

Life has a way of reminding us that we are not nearly as capable as we sometimes imagine.

The summary of my story is this: I can’t make it through this life on my own. Contrary to all my human grappling to be self-sufficient, capable, and effective, I come up short. In so many ways, my story is your story—and really, everyone’s story.

Whether we review the significant scenes of our past or simply consider the challenges facing us today, eventually we have to admit that the demands, decisions, disappointments, and relationships of everyday life are more than we can fix or control.

Why We Need Wisdom From God

Christ is ready and willing to give us wisdom beyond ourselves—beyond human reason, our best education, our natural instincts, and even our accumulated experience.

Think about your own life. Have you ever faced a relationship at the boiling point? Have you agonized over a personal failure, wondering how the next chapter could possibly unfold? Have you struggled to know how to help a hurting child, advise a devastated friend, or encourage someone you love who has wandered from faith?

Perhaps today you are facing a crossroads in your future, a crushing of your heart, or circumstances that have brought you to your knees.

The demands, decisions, disappointments, and relationships of everyday life are more than we can fix or control.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you have done—or whatever you are facing—you need wisdom. You need wisdom that is right, reliable, and relevant. Wisdom to guide your decisions and govern your emotions. Wisdom to understand yourself and relate well to the people you love—and especially the ones you don’t. But what exactly is this wisdom we so desperately need?

Biblical wisdom is the ability to see and respond to life according to God’s truth. For the Christian, that wisdom is ultimately found in Jesus Christ, whom Scripture calls “the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24).

Biblical Wisdom Is More Than Good Advice

We often think of wisdom as accumulated experience, sound judgment, or the ability to see life from God’s perspective. Certainly, all of those ideas have merit. Proverbs tells us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight” (Proverbs 9:10).

Yet for the follower of Jesus, there is something even more profound. Biblical wisdom is not merely a collection of principles that informs our minds and helps us make better decisions. Wisdom is ultimately rooted in a Person.

Jesus Christ Is the Wisdom of God

Paul describes Christ as the One “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). He calls Christ “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24). He tells us that Jesus became for us “wisdom from God” (1 Corinthians 1:30).

This changes everything. The gospel is not simply our introduction to the Christian life. It is the essence of the Christian life. The gospel is not merely the story of what Jesus did for us in the past. It declares the sufficiency of the living Christ for everything we face today.

For the Christian, wisdom is not the art of figuring it out but the adventure of following Him.

How to Experience Biblical Wisdom in Everyday Life

Our pursuit of wisdom is more than comprehending concepts. It is the privilege of knowing Christ. Through prayer, the truth of His Word, and the indwelling presence of His Spirit, we learn to abide in Him. His life increasingly shapes our thoughts, reactions, decisions, priorities, and relationships.

This is why I have come to define wisdom this way: Wisdom is Jesus Christ—embraced, experienced, exemplified, and exalted in our lives and relationships.

Embrace Christ

We embrace Christ through saving and sustaining faith in His sufficiency for all things.

Experience Christ

We experience Christ as we abide in Him through prayer and His Word.

Exemplify Christ

We exemplify Christ as His wisdom becomes visible through our character and relationships.

Exalt Christ

We exalt Christ when the supernatural fruit of His life becomes evident to others and brings glory to His name.

This kind of wisdom does far more than fill our heads with better ideas. It transforms our hearts.

Gospel wisdom does not simply give us better information for life; it gives us the transforming presence of Christ in life.

Stop Looking for Wisdom in All the Wrong Places

Years ago, Russell Conwell popularized the story Acres of Diamonds. It tells of a wealthy man who became obsessed with finding diamonds. He sold his property and traveled far from home in search of the treasure he believed would finally satisfy him. He never found it.

Ironically, the man who purchased his property later discovered diamonds in a stream running directly through the land. The treasure the original owner had traveled the world seeking had been beneath his feet all along.

There is a spiritual lesson here. We often search everywhere for the wisdom we desperately need. Another expert. Another podcast. Another book. Another strategy. Another seminar. Another opinion.

Certainly, God can use all these things. Wise counselors, good books, and accumulated experience are valuable gifts. But we dare not overlook the incomparable treasure already available to every believer:

Christ in you—the hope of glory.

The One who possesses all wisdom lives within you. He is wisdom in you, wisdom for you, and wisdom through you for the benefit of others.

How to Ask God for Wisdom

So perhaps the most important question today is not, “How am I going to figure everything out?” Maybe the better question is: “Jesus, how can I abide more deeply in You today?”

Before searching for another answer, pause. Open His Word. Seek His face. Acknowledge your dependence. Ask Him to govern your thoughts, emotions, conversations, relationships, and decisions. Then trust the promise of James: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach” (James 1:5).

The wisdom you desperately need is ultimately found in the Christ who already dwells within you.

The Wisdom You Need Is Already Available in Christ

Today, don’t simply ask Jesus to give you wisdom. Ask Him to be your wisdom. Abide in Him. Listen to Him. Trust His sufficiency. Let His Word shape your thinking, and His Spirit govern your responses. And then watch as His wisdom becomes increasingly embraced, experienced, exemplified, and exalted through your life.

A Prayer for God’s Wisdom

Lord Jesus, I confess that I cannot navigate the demands of this life in my own wisdom. You are the wisdom of God, and You live in me. Teach me to abide in You today. Govern my thoughts, guide my decisions, shape my reactions, and transform my relationships. May Your wisdom be embraced, experienced, exemplified, and exalted through my life—for my good, for the blessing of others, and for the glory of Your name. Amen.
