Prayer Guide: 2016 Elections

Prayer Gathering with and for “the Elect” during the Election Season

A Guide for a Corporate Prayer Gathering

  • If possible, all lyrics on screen as well as opening verses
  • Once we start, quiet musical padding underneath as people pray.

Opening Song(s) – Worship leader’s choice

Explain format and read text:

1 Timothy 1:17–2:4 (ESV)

17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

2:1 – First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

REVERENCE

17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

  • Prayers of praise – Focused on our God as King (Gathering in groups of 4-5 people)
  • PROMPTER: Pray short prayers of praise, one after another. “Lord, You are King because ____________________. “ (Complete the sentence with descriptions of His character, names and/or works)
  • Transition Song – Amazing Love – Bridge and Chorus (“You are my King . . .” )  or something similar.

RESPONSE

18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

  • Prayers of surrender – Clear conscience and the need for faith (Private prayer – encouraging participants to find a quiet place and posture to pray alone)
  • 1st PROMPTER: In a few moments of private prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart to convict you of any areas where your conscience may not be clear.  (Unconfessed sin or a relationship you need to reconcile. Confess these things and surrender your heart to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit).
  • 2nd PROMPTER:  Continuing in private prayer, ask the Spirit to reveal areas where your faith may be weak or lacking. Ask for grace to have strong and enduring faith in those specific areas)
  • Transition Song – Give me Faith (Elevation Worship) Chorus (2X)  – or something simple on the theme of faith.

REQUESTS

2:1 – First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,

  • Prayers “for all people” –  Back into groups of 4-5
  • PROMPTER: Thank you for _________________  (name) and I pray that they ________________ (specific requests for that person)
    • NOTE – Could pray in categories as time allows – family members, fellow believers, church leaders, etc.

for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

  • Prayers for the elect  (groups of 4-5 again) – “As I pray for our political leaders, I pray that I will become ______________” (Note the qualities found in vs. 2  – “peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way”   – Let these provide ideas for personal application. The idea = how God wants to change US as we pray)
  • Transition Song – Simple song about trust – or personal change

READINESS

This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  • Prayers for the spiritual battle for souls and opportunities for witness (Suggest combining groups to form circles of 8-10)
  • PROMPTER:  One person prays “I pray that _____________ will be saved.” (inserting the name of a non-Christian)
  • Antiphonal united response from each prayer circle after each individual prays:  “And come to the knowledge of the truth!
  • Continue this sequence for several minutes as various groups throughout the room pray for the lost and echo, “And come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Closing Song:

Leader’s choice – Suggest something about the mission of the Gospel – Perhaps “Mighty to Save”
