Where’s Jesus?

Where’s Jesus?

I know this may sound like an interesting question, but stop with me for a moment and visualize in your mind just where our Savior is currently.

Some of us are instinctively saying, “He’s in my heart.” And yes, praise God the “presence of Jesus” through the Holy Spirit is dwelling inside of every believer. But there is more to the answer than this grand truth.

Jesus, who is one and equal with the Father yet distinct, has existed in all of eternity, without beginning. In the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) we read about that time in history when Jesus became a human being and came down to live on earth. He had a fleshly body, walked and talked among us, and revealed the nature, character, and ways of God to us all. We know that after He was crucified Jesus rose from the dead, and then several weeks later He ascended back to heaven in bodily form.

Today I invite you to explore a verse that speaks directly to the current place where Jesus abides. In Hebrews 8:1-2 we read,

“Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.”

No less than 12 times in the New Testament we are told that Jesus is in heaven and at the right hand of God. In this verse in Hebrews, the description is a little more vivid as He is called a “high priest,” one who is “seated” on the “right hand” of what is described as the “throne of the Majesty in heaven”.

This is such a beautiful depiction of where Jesus is, and as we understand the words associated with this depiction of His current location we are blessed even more.

A Brief Background of Our Better Messiah

Hebrews is a book in the Bible designed to show Jewish Christians who were tempted to go back to the old system of the law that Jesus was the perfect fulfillment of the entire system of the Old Testament Mosaic law. One of the keywords in the book is “better.” Jesus was a better priest than an Old Testament priest, He was a better sacrifice, He instituted a better forgiveness, and He is dwelling in a better temple (heaven).

Jesus was a better priest than an Old Testament priest, He was a better sacrifice, He instituted a better forgiveness, and He is dwelling in a better temple (heaven).

In describing this “better” reality, the writer of Hebrews gives us great insight into where Jesus is and what He is doing.

Where’s Jesus and What’s He doing?

He is a high priest. He has offered a sacrifice on our behalf before the Father. Unlike the Old Testament priest who stood, Jesus is “seated” because His work in regard to providing forgiveness and salvation is complete.

Jesus is a high priest. He has offered a sacrifice on our behalf before the Father. Unlike the Old Testament priest who stood, Jesus is “seated” because His work in regard to providing forgiveness and salvation is complete.

He is at the “right hand.” This simply means He is in the place of “highest favor with God the Father.” It is a place of authority, where all things in the universe have been placed under His sovereign rule.

He is at the “throne of the Majesty.” What a beautiful description of the heavenly throne room. Revelation 4 gives us an amazing picture of the throne room of God. Jesus is there right now.

He is a “minister.” This encourages us to know that He is not aloof from our needs. Even as He sits in the glorious throne room of God, He is working on our behalf. Romans 8 tells us that Christ is interceding to the Father for you and me. Wow, right now He is aware of our needs, and He is mentioning them to the Father.

He is preparing to come again. One day when the sovereign time is right, He will get up, step through the clouds, and reappear for the whole world to see. John tells us, “When he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).

Take heart today. Jesus is in control!
